Halloween at Oatlands Park Hotel

A spine-tingling season awaits in the historic grounds of Henry VIII's former royal palace. Book our Halloween Afternoon Tea in Mulberry Restaurant, explore five centuries of royal heritage — and meet the five Haunted Heritage legends that have quietly walked these corridors since Tudor times.

Commissioned by Henry VIII in 1538 as a riverside retreat for the King and his successive queens, the Oatlands Estate has since welcomed kings, queens, dukes, duchesses — and, if the stories are true — a few long-term guests who never quite checked out.

HERITAGE

Haunted Heritage & Tudor Ghost Stories

In the summer of 1540, only weeks after the annulment of the Anne of Cleves marriage was pronounced, Henry VIII brought Catherine Howard to Oatlands. Courtiers described the mood in the palace as “gay and lightsome”, a deliberate contrast to the formality of Hampton Court.

More than four centuries later, the gentle scent of orange blossom and rose water — said to have been Catherine’s favourite — is occasionally reported by housekeeping staff on still summer evenings, particularly in rooms nearest the old Tudor chapel foundations, now beneath the Broadwater lawn.
